- neon tetra disease
-
a disease caused by the sporozoan Pleistophera hyphessobryconis, and named after the neon tetra fish in which it was first recognised. Whitish patches appear below the skin (destroying the neon stripe in the eponymous fish), muscle tissue is destroyed (causing contortions and abnormal movements), cysts form and release spores, the spores penetrate further into the fish and form more cysts, and are eventually spores are released into the water to infect more fish through food
